Gold Beach, OR to Fort Dick, CA

Saturday, 7/18 - 48 mile day that started out with a very long climb. The climb may have been almost two miles but the incline was not as difficult as we expected. However, it was very overcast and extremely cold. I put a shirt over my bike jersey and then put on my rain jacket over that. At one point fog descended on us and that just made it seem colder. We had a few long downhills and when you hit 25 to 30 mph it really feels cold. From the campground this morning that route followed the coast which was pretty wild and undeveloped. We didn't pass any stores for about 20 miles and then a restaurant suddenly appeared along the road. We ran into the mother-daughter duo (Heidi and Kelly) who we have seen off and on at lunch. We rode with the rest of the day. We are sharing a campsite with them tonight at an RV park near Fort Dick, CA. We stopped to help a cyclist who had passed us on a Bike Friday. She said she was heading to San Francisco to finish up a 3000 mile ride. Part of her ride included doing the continental divide trail which is an off-road and rugged trail that runs north-south through the Rocky Mountains. It is amazing that she did it on a Bike Friday which is a folding bike. Unfortunately, her bike had a badly cracked rim. I think she made it to a bike shop before the rim totally failed. We are inland from the coast but tomorrow we will reach Crescent City which is back on the coast. After getting a campsite tonight we had to ride about a mile or so to the only restaurant in the area which was a Thai restaurant which had surprisingly good food.
