Bandon to Gold Beach, OR

Today was a 50 mile day which included a 12 mile trek off the route to visit Cape Blanco lighthouse which is the westernmost point of the continental U.S. (although some dispute exists because there is a point of land in WA that actually extends further west but it can only be reached at low tide). Below are a bunch of photos from the lighthouse. The wind at the light house blew non-stop and it was quite strong. It was also freezing at the lighthouse. Today the lighthouse still operates but it is fully automated. In the past three lighthouse keepers (and their families) lived at the lighthouse to maintain the light which burned oil. Only had a few climbs today although at times we had a headwind and some strong crosswinds. At the end of the day we rode a stretch of route 101 which ran right along the ocean so you could see the coast and many very large rock formations out in the ocean. According to an interpretive sign at one overlook the rocks out in the ocean are remnants of an ancient shoreline. This last stretch flew by due to a strong tailwind. We are camping at a nice RV park which is a little in land from the ocean so we are somewhat shielded from the wind although it is still relatively cold tonight as it has been most nights since reaching Astoria, OR. We should reach the CA border by lunchtime tomorrow.
