Orick to Eureka, CA
Monday, 7/20 - 43 mile day. Today, despite staying in a motel last night we didn't get on the road until 10:45 am! Had breakfast with Tim who is a cyclist we met on the road a few days ago. He is heading to San Diego where he will spend some time before riding back to his home in Philadelphia. The morning ride was cold and overcast. In a few places we rode in some fog. Near Trinidad, CA we veered off of the Pacific Coast Highway (U.S. 101) onto an old road along the coast. The road was a rather poor road which was one lane wide in places and also unpaved along some stretches. However, it was right on the edge of bluffs overlooking the ocean and as a result it provided great views of the coastline. Later we rode a long bike path that took us through Arcata which had a very interesting looking downtown. Arcata is also the location of Humboldt State University which we rode through. On the outskirts of Arcata we rode through farmlands. Many of the farms had signs indicating they were certified organic farms. The area looked almost exactly like the hardscrabble farm areas we previously rode through in WA. We met up with Heidi and Kelly at the Eureka KOA where we are camping tonight. We also met a solo biker named Matt who lives in Portland and is cycling from Portland to San Francisco. He is an electronics engineer who previously worked for Intel. He now works for a regional Lions Club which provides vision screening for public school children.
