Equipment failure again!!

The morning started out great. Warmer then yesterday and some sun. Hit a hill at 2 miles and my rear hub started slipping again - same wheel problem I had before. I decided to attempt major repair work on the wheel myself. Sitting on the sidewalk along hwy 101 in Lincoln City, OR I removed the rear wheel from the bike and disassembled the rear hub. The axle with the freehub and cluster attached to it is easily removed from a Phil Wood hub with two 5 mm hex keys. Close inspection revealed two potential problems. First, the four sets of pawls didn't seem to be freely springing out. Second, the ramps or ridges the pawls engage inside the hub appeared to be worn. I have never worked on this type of hub so I don't know if the amount of wear is normal or excessive. The hub only has about 4,000 touring miles on it. I removed the pawls, cleaned them and reinstalled them. The amount of dirt/grit on the pawls seemed minimal but it did seem to be interfering with the spring action. After being cleaned three of them seemed to now be working properly but one still seemed to be hanging up. I reassembled the rear hub and reinstalled the wheel on the bike and it seemed to be working properly now. However, the hub began to slip again at the next hill. The closest bike shop was about 25 miles away and there were a few big hills on the way so it seemed unlikely I would make it to the bike shop. Hal noticed a U-Haul center across the street so I rented a 15 foot truck. We put the bikes in the back of the truck and drove 25 miles to a motel in Newport, OR which is located two blocks from a bike shop. The bike shop is closed today but it opens at 10 am tomorrow morning. It looks like a pretty good shop (based on looking in the window) so hopefully they can get me back on the road tomorrow morning. Hal left his rear panniers at the motel and drove the truck (with his bike in the back) back to the rental center in Lincoln City. He is riding the 25 miles to Newport. Total mileage for me today = 3; for Hal about 28. Below is a picture of the motel room before we left this morning. I found the TV to be an excellent hanging rack for wet clothing!

  1. 4000 miles sounds like alot. Any other parts with alot of miles on them? Maybe some preventative replacement before the next long trip.
