Monterey to Big Sur, CA

Sunday, 8/2 - 33 miles. Short day because due to the limited towns our options were 33 or 60 miles and we didn't want to do 60 miles today. We made a quick laundromat stop this morning and then picked up CA rt. 1 which was a beautiful ride along the coast. Unfortunately, the road had no shoulder and a lot of traffic. Cars are generally very tolerant of cyclists even when we hold up traffic due to lack of a shoulder on some of the narrow twisting portions of rt. 1. We are starting to see some of the same people at hiker/biker campsites but they are a new group because many (but not all) of the people we saw further north ended their trips in SF. We are seeing more hikers in the hiker/biker campsites. Some of them appear to be homeless. The Big Sur area appears to be a very popular destination both for Americans and foreign tourists. Every motel and campground is full.
